Kristin Cavallari has admitted she briefly called off her engagement to Jay Cutler in 2011 because she couldn’t “ignore red flags.”
The “Hills” alum, 35, revealed on Wednesday’s episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that the reason for the brief split was “much bigger than” the former NFL quarterback, 39, wanting her to be a stay-at-home mom. which she blamed at the time so she could “move on”.
“Basically, I called off the engagement [for] the same reason I got divorced, and I guess if there’s any takeaway from this is that you can’t ignore the red flags,” Cavallari said. “People don’t change and you have to trust your gut.”
The reality star claimed in her 2016 memoir Balancing Heels that she put off the wedding because Cutler “imagined he was the sole breadwinner and his wife stayed home.”

Reflecting on her eventual divorce from the athlete, the “Back to the Beach” podcast co-host said Wednesday that the decision to end her marriage was “really scary” and it took her “a few years to pull the trigger.”
“It was just time,” she said. “Nothing serious happened. After all, it was just time. … That’s the scariest thing. It’s always the saddest. I mean, it’s so much emotion, but it can also be the best thing.”

While there may not have been one bombshell that prompted Cavallari to file for divorce, she admitted she was “really unhappy” and in an “unhealthy relationship” that she didn’t want her children to think was “normal.”
Uncommon founder James explained that she has “no regrets” and is “grateful for our time together” because she has three children from the marriage: sons Camden, 9, and Jackson, 8, and daughter Saylor, 6.

“I’m very careful about what I say,” Cavallari said, adding that Camden even Googled her parents. “It was a toxic period, the end of history. That’s all I have to say.”
Cavallari also said that regardless of their “toxic” relationship, she hopes Cutler finds someone who makes him happy and “remarries” because their “kids benefit from it.”

The former Chicago Bears player proposed to the Laguna Beach graduate after just eight months of dating, and they tied the knot in June 2013.
Cavallari, who recently said that breaking up with Cutler was “the best thing I ever did,” filed for divorce in April 2020 — shortly after they announced their separation in a joint statement.
