WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – As voters stood in line for hours to vote on an abortion referendum, several were turned away by the Maize Recreation Center.
On Tuesday night, the Sedgwick County Elections Office said it was notified that the polling place had told voters who were in line before 7 p.m. to go to another location to vote. The Electoral Office said election officials did not have the authority to make that decision and were wrong to misinform voters.
“This was an inappropriate decision made by election workers,” said Elections Commissioner Angela Caudio. “This was immediately discussed with these workers.”
Those from the polling station at the Maize Recreation Center who arrived at another polling place were allowed to vote provisionally. The Electoral Office said that all polling stations have been instructed to monitor this information so that the Electoral Office can work to ensure that these votes are addressed correctly.
