Fire ban continues for northeast Avalon

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department has decided to continue with the fire ban currently in place.

The ban covers St. John’s, Mount Pearl and Paradise. Backyard fire pits, fireplaces, charcoal barbecues and open fires are included in the ban. Barbecues and propane fires are permitted.

The ban will remain in effect until further notice.

The decision was made after consultation with other fire departments in northeast Avalon, as well as the provincial government.

The department says that given the high temperatures and low rainfall, there is still high concern about fire risk.

Those using propane fireplaces and barbecues are reminded to keep a hose or fire extinguisher handy and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

The department says it is monitoring the situation and will provide updates on any changes to the ban.
