Large fire, police response to incident on Goulais Ave. (update)

Update at 7:45: The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department said in a news release that when officers arrived at the scene, an injured person was found in the driveway and taken to the hospital.

“During the initial investigation, it was determined that the individual had been assaulted,” the release said. “Officers are actively investigating and remain on scene as this is an active incident.”

Original information: Witnesses say that around 5 a.m. on Friday, they heard gunshots and screams.

Scores of residents lined Goulais Avenue, observing an increased police and fire presence. First responders were focused on a large house that had sustained fire damage. A ladder could be seen leading to the upper window.

Firefighters were in and out of the building and appeared to be trying to revive someone at the scene. An ambulance and a police car left around 6:30 in the morning

Two witnesses at the scene said they had just moved to the Sault from Toronto two days earlier. They said they expected to find some peace and quiet.

We will provide more details as they become available.
