Ontario COVID: The seventh wave has peaked

Ontario’s chief health officer says the province’s seventh wave of COVID-19 has peaked.

Dr Kieran Moore says key indicators such as hospital admissions and sewage alert from COVID-19 are falling.

Public Health Ontario says the rate of COVID-19 cases decreased in 22 of Ontario’s 34 health facilities for the week ending July 30, with the positivity rate decreasing slightly week over week and hospitalizations decreasing to 306 in compared to 463 the previous week.

46 COVID-19 deaths were reported for the week ending July 30, compared with 75 the previous week.

Moore says he expects the overall risk and impact on the health sector to continue to decline through August.

He also says that a fall wave of COVID-19 may not be as bad as he would have predicted a few months ago, given that so many people have been infected with the Omicron variant, combined with protection from high levels of immunization and the fact that a new variant of concern has not yet emerged.
