The Bay d’Espoir highway cannot be opened as the wildfires grow

(Bay d’Espoir Motorway via Department of Transport.)

Wildfires are increasing in central Newfoundland and plans to sporadically reopen the Bay d’Espoir Highway have been scuttled. Forestry crews are assessing the situation but will have to spend the day dealing with the fire on this, the 13th.

Mother Nature is doing them no favors with heat warnings, lightning strikes and no rain without consequences.

Duty Fire Officer Jeff Motti says the best they can do right now is jump to open it tomorrow.

Forestry wants cabin owners in the Bay d’Espoir Highway area to leave the area.

The department says anyone with cabins or campers around Great Rattling Brook (North and South), Miguel and Martin Lakes, Tote Brook, Paradise Lake, Sunday Pond and Northwest Gander River should evacuate as the wildfire is extremely active.

2/3: Safety is paramount. Residents, cabin owners and campers are asked to vacate their cabins and avoid affected areas, including forest access roads. Resources have begun arriving from Quebec and support efforts are expected to begin tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/y7Q3DPsWvU
