Hollywood newcomer Amber Midthunder made a surprise appearance at Tuesday’s Los Angeles premiere of Hulu’s “Prey.”
“It’s from the Sky-Eagle collection,” she told me of her dress on the arrivals carpet at the Village Regency Theater in Westwood. “Throughout this whole press tour, it was very important to me to always include having a local designer or jewelry or something like that. So in every look I’ve had, there’s something local.”

Prey, the fifth film in the Predator series, is set in the Comanche Nation in 1717. Midthunder, who is an enrolled member of the tribe on the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Indian Reservation, plays Naru, a young warrior saving his tribe from the Predator (Dane Diligro).
Here, Midthunder talks more about her fashion choices, working with an all-local cast and what it’s like dubbing the film in Comanche.

Why was it so important to incorporate local designs into your red carpet looks?
That was never an issue for me. Local artists and local creators have so much to offer and are a truly untapped resource – whether it’s fashion, film or business. When you look at our art and our clothes, we have things that you don’t often see, whether it’s patterns or materials like seashells and beads or earthy colors. Being able to incorporate that into urban fashion is really fun.
What was the first day on set like when you looked around and saw that all the leads were local?
It was very surreal. I get chills just thinking about it. The first day we got there everyone was in their outfits and I looked around and saw tipis and people in deerskins. It just became so transcendent and somehow very real. At some point in history, things really looked that way. This is how it really was for some of my ancestors. To see that and think what we were achieving was just amazing.

What was it like dubbing the Comanche movie?
The film was originally planned to be shot entirely in Comanche. When we were auditioning, we did all our scenes in English and Comanche to make sure we could do it and how it could play. We ended up making the film in English, but going back to Comanche is very special in terms of preserving the language. We are also making history. A film has never been released in its original dub after its initial release. I think that’s a huge victory and a huge thing that we can claim as a people. And just to introduce myself to the Comanche language—it’s nothing like the language I grew up with [with] — it was a personal gift for me to get to know the culture and the language so closely.
