The Granville strip was packed with emergency crews last night.
A man has been arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries after allegedly assaulting four people at a lodging house on Granville Street this weekend.
Vancouver police were called around 10:00 pm on August 6th by firefighters after responding to a report of a fire at a single occupancy residence (SRO) in the entertainment district on Granville Street near The Roxy Cabaret (932 Granville St.).
A man allegedly set fire to his apartment, according to police.
“The man then attacked and stabbed four people inside the building,” police said in a statement. “When officers arrived, they confronted the suspect who was still armed with the weapon. Police fired shots and the suspect was wounded.”
Police said all five people were taken to the hospital, including the alleged suspect, who had serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
“The (four) victims of the machete attack are also in the hospital with serious, life-changing injuries,” state police.
They note that there is currently no risk to public safety.
The Roxy’s social media accounts note that the business was closed last night.
“Due to an incident that occurred at a neighboring business, the Roxy will be closed tonight,” they explained in a tweet around 11:30pm on August 6.
“None of our staff nor our visitors were involved in the incident and everyone is safe. The incident did not occur inside the Roxy,” they continued.
Other posts overnight showed a chaotic scene with several police cars along with other emergency vehicles on Granville Street among people as the popular destination for nightclubs and late-night parties filled with crowds.
The Vancouver Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident. British Columbia’s Office of Independent Investigations has also been called in to investigate the incident.
This story has been updated after new information was released by the Vancouver Police Department.
