Congresswoman Nancy Mays (R-SC) blasted fellow Republicans on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday morning for aggressively pushing for strict abortion restrictions after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade earlier this summer.
“The Handmaid’s Tale was not supposed to be a road map,” she told NBC anchor Chuck Todd.
And she warned of the potential for the conservative party’s serious overreach to blow up in the GOP’s face in November — drawing a wave of otherwise lukewarm voters to vote Democratic. Her comments, of course, come amid stunning excitement Tuesday in Kansas, where a surprise voter turnout blocked the state’s attempt to repeal abortion rights.
“I’m staunchly pro-life,” Mace began with a caveat. “It’s going to be a problem in November if we don’t moderate.”
“We can’t get to the far right corners or the far left corners,” she said. “Somewhere in the middle is where we should meet.”
On the television news program, Mays emphasized the need to make exceptions for women who have been sexually assaulted, noting a traumatic personal experience she first revealed publicly three years ago: that she was raped at 16. And South Carolina’s only congresswoman set her own state on fire.
“In my state of South Carolina, there is legislation that prohibits the word ‘abortion’ on a website or website server. There are people who want to ban women from traveling out of state, there are people like my state who want to ban abortion for women who are rape victims and girls who are victims of incest,” she lamented.
“The majority of people here are fine with some guardrails, but they don’t want the extremes of either side,” she said.
