Original story:

Black smoke was seen coming from Algoma Steel late this afternoon.

SooToday learned from steel mill workers, who preferred to remain anonymous, that the fire may have started inside the coal tower.

The plumes of smoke seemed to stop for a few minutes and start again.

Flames are visible at the top of the tower.

Fire crews are currently on site.

The smoke has subsided significantly after 6:00 p.m., while the area around the coal tower is shrouded in fog.
