A trench collapse in Ajax left two dead

Rescue crews recovered the bodies of two men from a construction site in Ajax, Ont., where the trench they were digging collapsed Monday afternoon.

Sometime around midday, a large excavation near Rossland and Westney Roads collapsed, injuring two male workers and burying two others.

Ornge Air Ambulance responded to the scene and transported one person to hospital. A second worker suffered a broken ankle and was taken to a local hospital.

Firefighters and crews using heavy digging equipment worked through the night trying to rescue the trapped men.

Around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Durham Regional Police said they found the bodies of the two workers.

An Ontario Ministry of Labor investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing.
