Excavation collapses in Ajax: Two men remain trapped

Crews remained on the scene late into the night on Monday after a trench collapsed, injuring four workers at a construction site in Ajax.

The incident happened around midday on the carriageway near Rossland and Westney roads.

An Ornge Air Ambulance responded to the scene and transported one person to a hospital, Durham Regional Police told CTV News.

Ornge said their patient is a man in his 20s. He was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto with serious injuries, they said.

Another male victim was taken to a local hospital, Sgt. Joanna Bortolus of the Durham Regional Police Service told members of the media at the scene.

The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

Bortolus said two other workers remain trapped in the trench.

A number of police, fire and rescue vehicles were still visible at the scene late Monday night, along with heavy equipment.

Crews from the Toronto Fire Department are also on the scene assisting emergency crews with the rescue operation.

The Ontario Ministry of Labor is also on the scene and investigating the incident.

Rossland Road remains closed between Ravenscroft and Westney roads.
