Ontario has reported 96 new deaths from COVID-19 in the past week as many leading indicators of the pandemic’s severity, such as hospitalizations and positivity, head in opposite directions.
The health ministry said all 96 additional deaths occurred in the past 30 days.
Forty included residents of the provincial long-term care system.
There have now been 343 deaths due to COVID-19 in the province in the last 30 days and a total of 13,813.
In hospitals, according to the Department of Health, there were 1,382 people admitted with or for COVID-19 on Thursday, up from 1,322 on Wednesday, but down from 1,474 a week ago.
Of these, 142 people were in intensive care, 3 more than a week ago, and 52 were breathing with the help of a machine.
Provincial laboratories processed 11,890 test samples in the past 24 hours, generating a positivity rate of 13.4 percent, unchanged from Wednesday.
The weekly average positivity is now 13.4 percent, down from 14.5 percent in the previous seven-day period.
Overall, Ontario’s scientific advisory board for COVID-19 says the spread of the virus in wastewater is increasing in the GTA and southwestern Ontario, but decreasing elsewhere.
In the past 7 days, with children under five now eligible for first doses and adults eligible for fourth, the Department of Health says 162,575 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. Of these, 21,065 were first doses, 7,338 were second doses, 16,388 were third doses, and 117,784 were fourth doses.
