Vendors at Calgary’s new farmers market are adding the finishing touches before the northwest location opens this week.
The market’s second location, CFM West, opens to the general public on Friday. Plans for the location near WinSport were first revealed in 2018
“It took a lot of patience. It took a lot of dedication and a lot of passion from a lot of people,” said Mikayla Jane, who does marketing for the Calgary Farmers Market.
The original location of Currie Barracks closed in 2010 because more space was needed. Its new home on the Blackfoot Trail opened the following year.

“Currie Barracks was that little labor of love from people who really wanted to become local in our community,” Jane said.
“And it just grew from there.”
The new Northwest location just made sense, Jane said.

“We love the northwest because it really is the outpost for Calgary. This is your last stop before heading to the mountains. It’s your first stop when you get home,” Jane said.
Liana Edward is one of the vendors at the new location. She says setting up a brand new store, Yyseafood, with her husband has been a learning experience that has sometimes felt like a roller coaster.

“It was exciting, lots of highs and lows. Mostly peaks,” she said. “It’s been more than a year in the making for us.”
Lindsay Wood, who works at Red Deer-based Troubled Monk, said the brewery brewed a beer specifically for the opening.
“We’re very excited to open the doors and just be a part of the community,” she said.
“We’re ready to go.”
