One person was arrested after a bicyclist was struck and killed Thursday morning on Highway 401, a highway where bicycles and pedestrians are not allowed under Ontario law.

One person was arrested after a bicyclist was struck and killed Thursday morning on Highway 401, a highway where bicycles and pedestrians are not allowed under Ontario law.

Emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of the freeway at Colonel Talbot Road around 5:20 a.m., Middlesex OPP said. The cyclist who was traveling on the highway died on the spot.
Police have not released the identity of the deceased pending notification of his family.
The vehicle suspected of being involved in the crash was found by officers at another location, where the driver was arrested, police said.
“Our officers were patrolling for him and came across him,” OPP Const. Jeff Hare said of the vehicle. “It was further east down the 401.”
It’s unclear if charges have been filed. Police said more information was expected to be released Friday.
Bicycles are considered vehicles under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, but are not permitted on controlled access roads, including the province’s 400 series highways.
“Usually we don’t see cyclists on the highway. We see quite a few pedestrians out there, usually hitchhikers,” Hare said.
Traffic was reduced as a result of the collision to one lane eastbound on the 401 near the crash site while police investigated. All four lanes in the area of the collision were reopened by mid-afternoon Thursday.
