NS reports 5 deaths in weekly COVID-19 update

Nova Scotia reports five new deaths from COVID-19 in the seven-day period ending Monday.

In its weekly update Thursday, the province reported an average of 249 new cases per day for the week of Aug. 2 to Aug. 8.

According to Nova Scotia Health, there have been 316 patients tested positive for COVID-19 in hospitals across the province — an increase of nearly 12 per cent from last week. This number includes:

  • 46 patients were admitted for treatment of symptoms of COVID-19 (seven in intensive care unit).
  • 163 patients were admitted for treatment of another health problem but tested positive for COVID-19.
  • 107 patients who recovered from COVID-19 after admission to hospital.

There were fewer than five children admitted to IWK Hospital due to symptoms of COVID-19 as of Thursday. The IWK said 65 staff were out of work and 17 had self-isolated.

Nova Scotia Health reported 241 employees are off work Thursday because they have been diagnosed as positive for COVID-19, are awaiting COVID-19 test results, or were exposed to a household member who tested positive for COVID -19.

Public health officials in Canada have warned of an increase in hospitalizations as Omicron’s highly transmissible BA.5 subvariant circulates around the world, while provinces lifted carry mandates and ended other measures.

Nova Scotia had a total of 1,741 laboratory-confirmed cases in its last provincial dashboard update.

On July 6, the province restricted who can access PCR tests to select groups with symptoms, including people over 50, frontline health workers and immunocompromised people. People with a positive result from a rapid test can no longer get confirmation of the result through a PCR test.

Patients with COVID-19 who are admitted to a hospital in Nova Scotia are no longer treated separately from patients who do not have it.

As of March 2020, there have been 473 deaths from COVID-19 in Nova Scotia.
