When the moon takes the sky stage in summer, the spectacle is nothing short of amazing: Right now, Sturgeon’s Supermoon is at the top of the program, shining in all its glory.
July saw the Buck Supermoon, the biggest and brightest of the year. This followed the Strawberry Supermoon that delighted sky watchers in June.
They have other stage names. This sturgeon moon, which gets its primary name from the giant sturgeon season in the Great Lakes, is also known as the Thunder Moon, Honey Moon and Hay Moon, and is the last super moon of the year.

July’s Buck Moon, which gets its name because the bucks’ antlers are in full growth mode at the time, is also called the Salmon Moon and the Berry Moon.
June’s Strawberry Supermoon gets its name from the fruit harvest seasons. It is also known as Blooming Moon, Honey Moon and Honey Moon.
The full moon names collected from the iconic Old Farmer’s Almanac come primarily from Native American tribal, colonial American, and European sources.

“A full moon doubles as a supermoon when it is near perigee, or the point in the moon’s orbit that is closest to Earth,” the Almanac explains, making it bigger and brighter.
August’s Sturgeon Moon is the fourth and final supermoon of the year and coincidentally coincides with the Perseid meteor shower, considered by many to be the “best meteor shower of the year,” according to NASA. It will peak on August 13th and remain active until August 24th.
And if you happen to spot a bright-looking “star” near the moon, you’re looking at Saturn.
Moon lovers and stargazers enjoy the stunning celestial shows during the summer, and here are some of the best photos taken around the world:
