Canadiens acquire Sean Monahan from Flames

MONTREAL — General manager Kent Hughes announced Thursday that the Canadiens have acquired forward Sean Monahan and a conditional 2025 first-round pick from the Calgary Flames in exchange for future considerations.

Monahan, 27, previously spent his entire nine-year NHL career with Calgary, serving as an alternate captain since the 2015-16 campaign.

The Brampton, Ontario native registered 462 points (212 goals, 250 assists) in 656 regular season games and won 50.5% of his faceoffs.

A three-time leading scorer with 30 goals, Monahan enjoyed his most productive regular season in 2018-19 with career highs in goals (34), assists (48) and points (82) in 78 contests.

He ranks in the Top 10 in Flames franchise history in multiple categories, including games played (9th), goals (8th), power play goals (6th) and game-winning goals (3rd) .

Monahan also boasts 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 30 career playoff appearances.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound center was the Flames’ sixth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Before turning pro, Monahan played three seasons on the junior hockey team with the Ottawa 67’s of the OHL.

Here are the terms attached to the first-round selection acquired by Montreal:

1. In the event that Calgary’s 2024 first (1st) round pick is selections 20-32 (inclusive) (after the results of the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery are determined), then Montreal will have the option, exercisable up to 48 hours prior to the start of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, to trade a 2025 or 2026 conditional first-round pick to become Calgary’s first-round pick (1st ) round for 2024); or,

If Florida’s 2025 first (1st) pick moves to Calgary (subject to terms of earlier trade)

2. In the event that the conditions for triggering Montreal’s option as noted in #1 above do not occur or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail:

  • A) If both Calgary’s 2025 first (1st) round pick and Florida’s 2025 first (1st) round pick (previously acquired by Calgary) are not in the top-10 2025 NHL Draft selections (after the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), then Montreal will receive the earlier of the two (2) said selections; or,
  • B) If Calgary’s own 2025 first (1st) round pick is a top 10 selection and Florida’s 2025 first round pick (previously acquired by Calgary) is outside of the top 10 selections (after determining the results of the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery) , Montreal will receive Florida’s 2025 first (1st) round pick).

If Florida’s 2025 first-round pick is NOT moved to Calgary (subject to terms of earlier trade)

3. In the event that the conditions for triggering Montreal’s option as noted in #1 above do not occur or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail:

A. If Calgary’s own 2025 first (1st) round pick is not in the top 10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (after the results of the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery are determined), Montreal will receive Calgary’s 2025 first (1st) round pick, and additionally,

  • 1) If Florida’s own 2025 first (1st) round pick is not in the top 10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (after the results of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery are determined); and,
  • 2) Florida’s 2025 first (1st) round pick is traded to another NHL club; and,
  • 3) Florida’s 2025 first-round pick is better than Calgary’s 2025 first-round pick; then Calgary will trade its own 2025 fourth-round pick to Montreal.

B. If Calgary’s own 2025 first (1st) round pick is a top 10 selection (after the results of the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery are determined), Montreal will receive Calgary’s first ( 1st) round for 2025, subject to the following condition below:

  • 1) In the event Calgary’s 2025 first (1st) round pick is the first (1st) overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft (after the results of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery are determined ), Calgary would retain its own 2025 first (1st) round pick and Montreal would instead receive Calgary’s own 2025 third (3rd) round pick and a 2026 conditional pick. in the first (1st) round. Montreal will get the better of Calgary’s first (1st) round in 2026 or Florida’s 2026 first (1st) round pick (post 2026 NHL Entry Draft lottery results determined) (previously conditionally acquired by Calgary).
