‘We’ll have more’: Premier thinks rebate checks are helping inflation

Manitobans could be getting more rebate checks from the provincial government to help deal with rising cost inflation.

Premier Heather Stefanson addressed the issue at a press conference Thursday announcing an increase in Manitoba’s minimum wage.

“My message today is clear: our government is here to help you. To help you and your families mitigate these challenges,” Stefanson said at the announcement.

The premier said mailing checks to Manitobans to help with the cost of inflation is not out of the question.

“We’ve already done a number of things,” Stefanson said. “We recognize that there are additional inflationary pressures, I indicated that we are looking at what we can do and that could potentially be one of the options to provide more affordability.” But we will have more. We’ll have more coming in the coming weeks on that front.”

New numbers released by Statistics Canada on Tuesday showed that annual inflation in Canada slowed to 7.6 per cent in July, largely driven by a drop in gas prices.
