‘Never Have I Ever’ Dethroned on Netflix’s Top 10 List by Surprise Show

I have never had

Netflix

Never Have I Ever has to be one of Netflix’s most successful original comedies right now this side of Bojack Horseman, as it’s a rare comedy series that rules the top 10 when it arrives and stays there for quite some time.

However, despite spending a week at the top of Netflix’s top 10 list, Never Have I Ever was indeed dethroned by a new show. Well, in this case it’s not a new show, it’s an old show, the one it previously supplanted, The Sandman. But the situation is a bit strange.

Not just because The Sandman is so popular that it came back to the top after people finished Never Have I Ever. That’s because The Sandman, two weeks after its premiere, took the highly unusual step of releasing a secret, eleventh bonus episode to join the original ten from season one.

The episode featured two separate stories, “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Calliope,” ones that didn’t quite fit into the original series, but were filmed and Netflix and the showrunners wanted to air them anyway. But instead of making them a somewhat pointless ending to Season 1, they ended up deciding that the best time to release the bonus episode was now after Watchers was done, creating a rather unusual situation that we’ve almost never seen on Netflix. before. But they wanted it to be a secret surprise that way. It seemed to be enough to push The Sandman to #1, though I would expect that to be short-lived once people get through the new episode.

The show that could be #1 by the time I even finish writing this is the new series Echoes, the critically acclaimed mystery about a pair of twins where one goes missing, starring Michelle Monaghan and Matt Bomer. But bad reviews have never stopped a Netflix series from climbing the list, and it looks like it could be the next number one for a spell.

Never Have I Ever is already in third place, but its place won’t decide its fate, unlike most Netflix shows. Why? Because this is all already decided. Netflix has already renewed Never Have I Ever for a fourth and final season, where it will be Devi’s senior year, which will take her to high school and end before the show does some awkward college parting with the cast. The show just lost Paxton since he graduated, but it’s unclear what role he might have in Season 4 as an ASU student.

So I expect the roster to change quite a bit for a while here, with this odd Sandman episode throwing a wrench into the usual machinations. My guess is that Selling the OC will hit #1 when it debuts next weekend.
