Ontario Provincial Police said Perth’s Route 43 between Perth Road 109 and Perth Road 110 — a stretch of country road near the small airport — was closed while officers investigated the twin-engine plane crash. In an interview, OPP spokesman Const. Kim Lyon said local police and firefighters were called to the scene of the crash in an empty field shortly after 9 a.m.

“I can tell you at this point that it was a small twin-engine plane. There was one person on the plane who died. The plane caught fire and that’s all we know at the moment. The next of kin has been notified, but we are still awaiting confirmation before releasing the name of the deceased, Lyon said.
She had contacted Transport Canada to help with the investigation, police said. It is not known what caused the crash, where the plane came from or where it was headed.
Although investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada were on the scene for most of the day after the crash, a spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
While the Perth section of Route 43 remained closed until Tuesday evening, Lyon said he expected the investigation into the collision and cleanup of the wreckage to be completed by the end of the day.
The pilot’s remains were recovered earlier this afternoon.
Stratford Airport is approximately six kilometers north of the city on an area of 195 hectares in the city of Perth East.
