An administrator at a New Sudbury high school has now been charged with failing to act on complaints of alleged teacher misconduct
Greater Sudbury Police have laid additional charges against a second person in connection with a teacher at the College of St. Charles, facing multiple sex-related charges.
On June 23, GSPS said they received a complaint of inappropriate behavior and touching at St. Charles College involving a 56-year-old teacher and students under the age of 16.
As a result of the investigation, on June 30, detectives from the Major Crimes Unit arrested and charged the man with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference. The man appeared in court on bail the same day.
At the time, police said they were concerned there might be other survivors and said they hoped the man’s arrest would give other survivors a chance to come forward.
As a result of an ongoing investigation, GSPS announced new charges against teacher Michael Zanier on August 26. He is charged with five more counts of sexual assault and five more counts of sexual interference.
The suspect appeared in court on bail on August 25 to answer the charges.
As a result of that investigation, GSPS Major Crimes Unit detectives have arrested and charged a former administrator at the school, police said this afternoon.
“Due to the sensitive nature of the incident and to protect the identity of the survivors, no further details will be released,” police said.
The name of the 40-year-old former manager has not been released by the police. He was arrested on August 25 and charged with criminal negligence and failure to provide the necessities of life.
“Students are believed to have attempted to report incidents to administration,” which, given the nature of the crime, suggests police believe the administrator did not act on the complaints.
The man was released on bail. He is due in Sudbury court on November 2 to answer to the charges. His name cannot be released as the information has yet to be confirmed in court, GSPS said.
