ICBC also revealed that more drivers are using their phones than ever before.
A Vancouver driver uses not one, not two, but four electronic devices while driving.
The Vancouver Police Department’s (VPD) Traffic Unit pulled a distracted driver off the road on Tuesday (August 30) and found four electronic devices in the front passenger seat, including three phones and a laptop.
It happened after the driver went around a road closed sign “into oncoming traffic and passed the police vehicle with its emergency lights on,” VPD’s traffic division said in a tweet.
The incident happened on Dunsmuir Street and VIA contacted VPD for more information.
That same day, ICBC shared a new Ipsos survey that revealed more drivers across the province are using their phones while driving compared to 2019.
The survey found that 43 percent of drivers surveyed admitted to “using their phone at least once every 10 trips,” up from 33 percent in 2019.
“Distracted driving is a serious problem in British Columbia, accounting for more than one in four fatal crashes and claiming the lives of 76 British Columbians each year,” the news release said.
Police data, based on a five-year average from 2016 to 2020, also revealed, according to the news release, that an average of 25 people die in driving-related crashes each year in the Lower Mainland.
