An abandoned campfire in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley has sparked a wildfire that has grown to five hectares, according to local authorities.
Mission firefighters posted on social media Sunday morning that they were called to the area near Stave Lake to assist the British Columbia Wildfire Service Saturday night.
“This fire is outside the city limits. The fire is not near any structures or infrastructure,” the post said.
“We ask the public to stay away from the area as there will be active firefighting operations throughout the day.”
The BC Wildfire Service Control Board says the fire is believed to be human-caused and wildfire near the Florence Lake Service Road.
The weekend was marked by hot and windy weather, which caused increased wildfire activity in the region. Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued due to the growing fire near Hope and the Lower Mainland is under an air quality advisory.
