Ontario has received its first doses of the bivalent vaccine designed to tackle the Omicron variant of COVID-19 — and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is planning a regional rollout of the doses.

WECHU CEO Nicole Dupuis, who is leaving the organization on Sept. 23, said the bivalent vaccine campaign will use the same strategies and channels that have served previous COVID-19 booster vaccine campaigns.

“Our plan is not that different from what it has been in the past,” Dupuis said.
“We will be using mobile clinics as well as our clinics here at our health units (1005 Ouellette Ave. in Windsor and 33 Princess St. in Leamington).”
Primary care providers and pharmacies will also be sources for the public to obtain the bivalent vaccine.
Dr. Shankar Nesaturai, the region’s acting medical officer of health, said an estimated 252,000 people in Windsor-Essex are not up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations — and thus would be eligible for the bivalent vaccine.
