A “severe thunderstorm” watch is in effect for Monday as strong winds and large hail are expected to hit parts of southern Ontario.
Around noon, Environment Canada warned residents that thunderstorms were expected sometime this afternoon across southeastern Ontario, including the Niagara, Peterborough, Bancroft and York regions.
According to the weather forecast, the storm is expected to bring strong winds of up to 90 km/h, heavy rainfall and large hail up to three centimeters in diameter.
The federal agency reminds residents that this size can cause injury and property damage.
“Strong gusts of wind can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, snap tree limbs and overturn large vehicles,” the warning said.
“Heavy rains can cause flash flooding and water logging on roads.”
The Office of Fire and Emergency Management is encouraging residents in those areas to take cover immediately “if threatening weather approaches.”
For Toronto, the Weather Network is predicting a 40 percent chance of rain with less than a millimeter of rain expected to fall.
