iPhone 14 Pro owners are reporting issues when recording videos in third-party camera apps, with the smartphone producing blurry and shaky footage.
Apple’s update to the iPhone 14 Pro includes a number of changes to the camera, including a 48-megapixel sensor and an Action mode that produces smooth video. However, third-party apps that use the camera seem to have issues with the new hardware. Some users have noticed that the camera module shakes when used in apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. As 9to5Mac first reported, the issue causes videos captured by the camera in apps to fail to post due to constant jittery motion. Social media posts such as Reddit claim that there is a lot of stuttering, which is believed to be due to the optical image stabilization (OIS) system. In the case of the iPhone 14 Pro, the 48MP main camera includes Apple’s second-generation Sensor Shift OIS, which physically shifts the sensor, while the other camera uses an older and more conventional OIS system.
iPhone 14 Pro camera: Likely a software issue
Some users report that they can see and hear flickering and mechanical movement when using the third-party app’s camera capabilities. In a video showing the problem, the iPhone can be seen moving slightly and making a grinding sound. It is not known how many iPhones may be affected by the problem. I could not reproduce the problem myself. Although the issue occurs with third-party apps, it doesn’t seem to occur when using the default camera app in iOS 16. This could mean there’s a software issue that needs to be addressed by the apps, how they communicate and work with the camera module. However, it’s also possible that Apple will release an iOS 16 update that fixes the bug. At the moment, it is not clear how Apple will react to the phenomenon. (Image: Apple)
