Of all San Francisco traditions, there are few as controversial as Fleet Week. Some gather on rooftops across the city to enjoy the spectacle of the surprisingly dangerous Blue Angels flights, others say it’s an expensive waste of taxpayer money that has dogs chewing on the walls.

However you feel about the nation’s biggest celebration of the armed forces, it’s nearly impossible to avoid. The noise of the Blue Angels flights resonates throughout the city, but there are also many joyful sounds coming from military bands that stand in the public parks and bring good cheer as they march around the Marina. Meanwhile, the influx of men in uniform leads to difficult decisions for some of the city’s single women (although viral posts from Overheard SF should be taken with a grain of salt).
As you might expect, the event is a field day for amateur and professional photographers alike who try to capture images of some of the amazing aerial action. Here are some of the best photos we’ve seen posted on social media of the angels racing across the sky in tight formation past landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Salesforce Tower and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
