Liz Truss’s Tories plunge below 20% in bombshell poll

Conservative support fell below 20 per cent in the worst poll yet for embattled Liz Truss, giving Keir Starmer’s Labor a remarkable 34-point lead.

The poll also found that just 9 percent of voters – less than one in 10 – have a favorable view of the prime minister, compared to 65 percent – almost two-thirds – who view her unfavorably.

Her personal ratings recorded in the poll were lower than those achieved by Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn in the depths of their periods of unpopularity.

And it found that less than a third of voters (32 percent) now want to stay out of the European Union, compared with 41 percent who want to reverse Brexit and rejoin. Twenty percent did not know and six percent refused to give an opinion.

The PeoplePolling survey for TV channel GB News showed Labor on 53 per cent, to 19 per cent for the Tories and 9 per cent for the Lib Dems.

A result along these lines would give Labor a convincing triple-digit majority in the House of Commons and threaten to almost wipe out the Tories.

However, there were signs that the spectacular swing in favor of Labor was due more to dislike of the Truss administration than enthusiasm for Starmer.

Just a third of those asked (33 per cent) said they had a positive view of the Labor leader, compared to 41 per cent who had a negative view.

Matthew Goodwin, professor of politics at the University of Kent, told GB News: “This is a new low for the Conservative Party, which has not been at this level since the party’s near total collapse in the 2019 European Parliament elections.

“With 19 per cent of the national vote, the Conservative Party is now staring into the abyss.

“Only 9 per cent of the country say they like Liz Truss, who is now more unpopular than Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn ever were.

“It is difficult, if not impossible, to see how she can turn the corner and repair her public image.”
