Boris Johnson has enlisted the support of dozens of Tory MPs, former donors, party campaigners and the team that helped him win the 2019 election as he bids his way to the bottom two in the Tory leadership race.

The former prime minister is expected to end his holiday in the Dominican Republic and return to Britain later today as he attempts an extraordinary political comeback.

He has already secured the public support of more than two dozen MPs with his whip operation
