North-east Scotland will be at the center of the historic alignment of three norths used for navigation in Britain, according to the Ordnance Survey (OS).
Map experts said true, magnetic and grid north met at one point for the first time in Britain’s mapping history at the Langton Matravers, near Swanage in Dorset on Wednesday.
After August 2025, the triple line will not hit land again until around May 2026 near Newburgh on the east coast of Aberdeenshire.
OS said its “last stop” on UK land would be Freysburg around July 2026.
Because of the unpredictability of the magnetic field, the OS said it was difficult to predict when the three norths might align again. He said it was expected to be at least several hundred years.
