The planet Jupiter will be visible as a bright spot above the moon on Friday evening, according to Astronomy Ireland.
The view should be visible to the naked eye from 5 p.m., the education organization said, when Jupiter will be in the upper left corner of the moon as it rises in the east.
They will be closest around 10pm, high in the south, and won’t set until 3am.
Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System and is known for its Great Red Spot, a storm big enough to engulf Earth.
Jupiter is 625 million kilometers from Earth, but the Moon is only 400,000 kilometers away, says David Moore, chairman of Astronomy Ireland and editor of Astronomy Ireland magazine.
He added that the Moon is more than 1,500 times closer to us than Jupiter, but Jupiter is 40 times wider than the Moon.
“Things to think about as you gaze in awe at this incredible sight for just one night,” Mr Moore said.
