TWO flares can be seen miles away as crews at the Fawley refinery respond to an “operational incident”.
Exxon Mobil confirmed that they had “experienced an operational problem” at one of its units earlier this evening.
Torches can be seen burning miles away as crews respond to deal with the situation.
The company also warned that the siren on site can be heard and is part of the procedures.
On Twitter, the oil firm said: “We are currently dealing with an operational issue on site. Our teams have responded and are working to remedy the situation.
“Our on-site siren can be heard and is part of our procedures. Please continue to monitor Twitter for more information.”

In a statement, Exxon Mobil said: “Earlier this evening we experienced an operational issue on one of our units. Our own field teams are responding and working to address the situation and isolate the block in question.
“We are using our rockets, which are part of our safety and standard operating procedures, to support this work.
“We apologize if the use of our missiles caused any disturbance.”

Another tweet, an hour later, added: “As our teams continue to address the operational incident, our flares are currently operational and will be visible to the community.
“This is part of our normal safety procedures. Please keep following our account for further updates. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
