UFC star Conor McGregor has said he “wanted information” about becoming the next owner of Liverpool just days after Fenway Sports Group put the club up for sale.

The Irishman hasn’t been active in the Octagon since his devastating loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, and it looks like that could be down to his reading of other business ventures.

With FSG looking to sell the Premier League outfit, McGregor – who is a known Manchester United fan – threw his name into the mix as a potential successor to the Anfield owners via a Q&A on social media.

Liverpool were put up for sale by FSG on Monday and a host of potential buyers are showing interest

Asked by fans if he would be interested in buying the Merseyside club, McGregor wrote: “I WOULD LOVE TO! I asked for my information on this, yes. As soon as I heard. What a turn of events! What a club!”.

His statement comes as a bit of a surprise given his affiliation with Manchester United – something that has been vociferously reported in the past.

Speaking at FIFA Q&A in 2019, he said: “Back then I was more of a player than an observer, but Manchester United was my team.

“Only the other day I came across an old photo of me wearing that infamous gray United shirt that I bought with my [First Holy] Communion money at age eight. I see my son when I look at this picture. I would like to know where he is now. A truly ‘Notorious’ football shirt!’

He also posted a picture of himself wearing a United top, hours after his UFC rival Khabib Nurmagomedov visited Old Trafford for a match last year.

The UFC legend joins a list of other potential buyers that have emerged since news broke that FSG were looking for new owners.

The favorite was Britain’s richest man – Sir Jim Ratcliffe – although he declared he was not interested in trying to buy Liverpool and was instead focused on improving the fortunes of Ligue 1 side Nice.

“Our position has evolved since the summer and we are now focusing our efforts in Nice and raising our ambitions for the club to make it a top-tier club in France to compete with PSG,” a spokesman for Ratcliffe told The Telegraph.

“It would represent much better value for our investment than buying one of the Premier League’s top-tier clubs.”

FSG’s decision to sell the Merseyside club came as a shock given the team’s success on the pitch in recent years.

It is understood that an information memorandum, which is effectively a sales document, was sent to potential buyers last month and this shows that there is a significant difference to situations in the past.

The timing of this development is important, with the failure of the breakaway Europa League to start in 2021 and the £4.25bn sale of Chelsea in May believed to be important factors in FSG’s decision to test market interest in Liverpool .

When asked about it on Monday, sources in Boston declined to give any confirmation or give an indication whether chief investor John W. Henry, chairman Tom Werner or president Mike Gordon would attend this weekend’s home game against Southampton.
