Messi gains 21 million more followers on Instagram
World Cup winner Lionel Messi’s Instagram following jumped by 20 million as the stars in Qatar amassed an extra 210 million in total.
But despite his troubles at club and international level, Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo remains the king online, bolstered by nearly 19 meters tall to 519 metres.
Kylian Mbappe’s latest hat-trick for beaten France against Argentina helped him rise from 73.5m to 83m.
And Richarlison has led a string of big increases for Premier League players.
The Tottenham Hotspur striker saw his support swell from 17.3m to 19.6m, while Manchester United’s Brazilian winger Anthony went from 6.2m to 9.3m.
But as a World Cup winner, Aston Villa’s Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez may be disappointed to jump ‘only’ from 4.3m to 7.5m
AceOdds compiled the list with impressive percentage jumps coming from South Korea’s Cho Gue-Sung (8773%), Richarlison (167%) and Argentine duo Julián Alvarez (136%) and Enzo Fernandez (353%)
An extra million followers attracted £3,000 in sponsorship from social media posts, so Messi’s heroics earned him an extra £63,000 from the tournament. The 35-year-old PSG striker can now claim £1,194,707 in fees for just one Instagram post.
