LG’s future screens for cars include a sliding OLED display

(Pocket-lint) – LG Display, the screen research and development arm of the big Korean manufacturer, has unveiled several new technologies at CES – mostly OLED-based. We’ve seen OLED concepts for mobile devices and a new, much brighter OLED panel for TVs. Now he’s turning his attention to cars.

It demonstrated screen technology that it hopes will be used in future electric cars, not least autonomous vehicles.

This includes an 18-inch sliding car OLED that is stored on the ceiling out of sight but extends down when needed – either for rear passengers or for those up front while the car is driving itself.

In addition, the company’s development of transparent OLED technology could lead to windows that can be viewed through as well as display content when needed. The CES concept area used a 55-inch version for demonstration.

Also on display was a 57-inch screen using LG’s LTPS LCD technology that covers the entire dashboard, and a 12.3-inch glasses-free 3D LCD cluster that provides the driver with real-time traffic information.

Other automotive technologies it is working on include Tandem OLED, which uses two OLED layers to increase brightness and durability, and new P-OLED panels.

Using Tandem OLED technology with a plastic substrate, advanced P-OLED screens have significantly reduced power consumption and weight, making them ideal for use in a car.

Finally, ATO (Advanced Thin OLED) technology is introduced by LG Display, which reduces the thickness of the OLED panel by 20 percent.
