The Morning After: Lenovo made an e-ink tablet to rival Amazon’s Scribe

The PC assembly line at CES doesn’t let up. Lenovo was busy. Let’s start with the newest YogaBook, the dual-screen YogaBook 9i. Instead of folding like a regular laptop, this… thing unfolds a screen on top of another with a thin keyboard at the bottom. Fortunately, as well as the keyboard and stylus accessories, there’s a stand to ensure those two 13.3-inch 2.8K OLED displays stay in place. There is an incredible amount of flexibility here. You can have the screens unfolded like a book, stacked on top of each other, or like a classic laptop, with the bottom screen showing the keyboard.

Then there’s the $400 Smart Paper tablet. A shameless jab at Amazon’s rival Scribe e-ink tablet, it has a screen to write and annotate, and a battery-free stylus that you can slip into the case. There are nine pen settings (such as pencil, ballpoint and marker) and over 4,000 levels of pressure sensitivity to ensure your sketches come out the way you planned. Lenovo’s Smart Paper can convert your handwriting to text, and you can use keyword search to find what you’re looking for—something Amazon’s version lacks. Conversely, Lenovo won’t have a library of Kindle books to scribble notes on—they’re two different propositions.

Oh, did you want a twist? Well, Lenovo isn’t done: It also unveiled a new ThinkBook Plus that twists and turns to switch between e-ink and OLED screens. In short, it’s a bit of both. Check out our full impressions and specs breakdown here. We’ll be back Monday with more CES coverage, including the Engadget Best of CES winners.

Back in 2020, Ring showed off a concept home drone. Now it’s getting closer to patrolling the homes of anxious types. The mini drone roams your home, scanning for intruders when you’re not there. The whole device, including the docking station, looks more like a kitchen gadget than a security drone. The Always Home Cam makes that drone-like buzz—don’t expect it to sneak up on intruders—and you train it by holding it (without covering the camera) and walking around your home in trajectories. There is also an option to set multiple paths and waypoints. Ring has yet to announce a release date or price.

While Lenovo is a formidable force in the enterprise laptop space thanks to its long line of ThinkPads and ThinkBooks, Motorola is trying to bring a similar aura to its latest mobile device: the ThinkPhone by Motorola. With an aramid fiber fabric on the back, it certainly looks the part. The big question is: Do people want a phone that fits their work laptop? And will people be inclined to choose the ThinkPhone over the usual suspects Apple and Samsung?

The concept will serve as a design template for upcoming production cars.

There’s finally an electric Ram truck—or at least a concept for one. Stellantis, an automaker with a stable base of more than a dozen North American and European brands, including Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Maserati and Fiat, has extremely ambitious goals to make 100 percent of its European sales and half of its U.S. sales all-electric vehicles . The company has yet to reveal the battery size for this concept truck, but has confirmed that the system will use an 800V architecture, allowing it to add up to 100 miles of range in around 10 minutes with a 350kW DC fast charger.

Prototypes have reportedly passed Ministry of Transport tests.

Goodyear is back with an improved sustainable prototype tire – 90 percent sustainable materials – a full 20 percent improvement over last year. The company says the 90 percent compound has already passed Department of Transportation tests, approving it for road use. The 90 percent tires reportedly offer lower rolling resistance than the company’s reference tires, meaning better fuel economy and longer EV range.

The company is still working with its supply chain partners to secure enough precursor materials to produce them on a commercial scale, and even plans to have a fully sustainable compound by 2030. The new materials include four types of carbon black made from both organic, as well as from inorganic sources: silica from soybean oil and rice husk, post-consumer polyester and bio-renewable pine tar resins.
