A massive power outage leaves a large swath of Toronto in darkness

A power outage in Toronto plunged several large parts of Canada’s largest city into total darkness, from downtown all the way to Scarborough.

Reports of widespread power outages began pouring in on Twitter shortly after 5:15 p.m. Friday from hydro customers in Deer Park, Yonge & Eglinton, Mount Pleasant, Forest Hill, York Mills, Scarborough Bluffs and many other neighborhoods to the north and east Toronto.

“We are aware of several widespread outages affecting customers across the city,” Toronto Hydro tweeted at 5:41 p.m. “We are investigating and will provide an update soon. Thank you for your patience.”

Toronto police provided a similar update at 5:42 p.m., writing:

“POWER OUT: Toronto Police are aware of a major power outage affecting the Scarborough and Lawrence/Eglinton area. The reason for the outage is unknown. There is no time frame for power restoration. Remember to treat intersections as a 4-way stop, if there is traffic the signals are gone.”

From what I see via tweets is: ⚠️West at least to Bathurst ⚠️East to Bayview ⚠️South to St. Clair ⚠️North to York Mills

Plus a whole other break in Scarborough.

It’s unclear exactly how many customers are affected by the outage. Toronto Hydro’s outage map has not yet been updated as of 6:00 p.m. and does not show any issues.

Residents without power say they haven’t been able to self-report the outages because of what appears to be a rush on the website. People are literally waiting in line for close to an hour to report outages in their areas, which suggests it could be quite large.

“Outage Update: We are experiencing multiple outages due to loss of supply from Hydro One,” Toronto Hydro tweeted just before 6 p.m. Friday.

“We are working together to investigate the cause and will provide further updates as they become available.”
