At the end of her statement, Osaka added a “side note,” saying that “I don’t think there’s a completely right path in life, but I’ve always believed that if you move forward with good intentions, you’ll eventually find your way.”
Last week, Osaka, who won the 2019 and 2021 Australian Open, withdrew from this year’s competition.
In 2021, Osaka said she was considering taking a break from tennis in an emotional post-match interview after losing in the third round of the US Open.
“I feel like lately when I win I don’t feel happy; it feels more like a relief. And then when I lose, I feel very sad,” said Osaka, who was 23 at the time. “I don’t think that’s normal.”
Over the years, Osaka has openly shared her struggles with the pressures of tennis and the expectations that come with playing at the highest level.
