Algoma University professor charged in alleged assaults

An Algoma University professor faces multiple charges in the alleged assaults of five students.

Marie, Sault Ste. Police said they opened an investigation in mid-December into complaints against a part-time computer science professor who had worked at the university since 2008.

Police say the man assaulted and hit five people “with sexual intent.”

They say the victims were students at the university during the alleged assaults, which are said to have taken place between September 2021 and this January.

Police said a 56-year-old man was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of sexual assault with a weapon and five counts of assault.

The university says the professor is currently suspended from all duties and prohibited from visiting campus or having contact with students.
