Chilling online comments made by suspected killer Brian Koberger when he was a teenager have resurfaced, revealing how he felt “empty”, had “no emotion” and felt “little remorse” years before he killed four University of Idaho with a brutal knife attack.

Back in 2011, when he was 16, Mr Koberger spoke about his mental health issues in an online forum and described seeing “nothing” when he looked at his own family.

“As I hug my family, I look at their faces, I see nothing, it’s like watching a video game, but less so,” he wrote.

More than a decade later, he faces the death penalty for the Nov. 13 murders of Kayleigh Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.

On Friday, the Chronicles of Olivia YouTube channel released an interview with Goncalves’ family, recorded two days before Mr. Kohberger’s arrest on December 30. The family remembers Kaylee as a hard-working young woman who took summer courses to graduate early.

Mr Kohberger appeared in court on Thursday, where he agreed to waive his right to a speedy preliminary hearing and his next court date was set for June 26.

Surgical gloves, garbage disposal and car cleaning: Bryan Kohberger’s strange behavior after Idaho murders revealed

During a period of surveillance, investigators observed Mr. Kohberger behaving suspiciously, including wearing surgical gloves, secretly disposing of trash and meticulously cleaning his car.

The 28-year-old criminal justice doctoral student is charged in the Nov. 13 murders of Kayleigh Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin that rocked the small college town of Moscow, Idaho.

The net had been closing in on Mr. Kohberger for several weeks and he was placed under law enforcement surveillance for four days, leading to his arrest at his family home in Pennsylvania on December 30.

The surveillance team was tasked with both tracking the suspect so authorities could arrest him as soon as a warrant was obtained and obtaining a DNA sample for investigators to use to try to match him to DNA found at the crime scene .

Was Brian Koberger the stalker Kayleigh Goncalves complained about?

Before the Nov. 13 massacre, investigators believe Mr. Koberger stalked the victims’ homes at least 12 times.

Mobile phone records show his phone rang in the area of the King Road house at least twelve times between June 23 and November 13, when the murders took place.

The exact dates of those cases were not disclosed in the documents, but all of the first were in the late evening or early morning hours.

One incident was identified on August 21 when the suspect was stopped by police just minutes from the home where he is believed to have stabbed the four students to death three months later.

A citation from the Latah County Sheriff’s Office obtained by The Independent earlier this week revealed that the traffic stop occurred around 11:40 p.m. at the intersection of West Pullman Road and Farm Road in Moscow.

The record shows he was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt — just 1.7 miles and a five-minute drive from the victims’ dorm.

On that occasion, Mr. Kohberger’s cellphone rang in the area of the King Road house from about 10:34 p.m. to 11:35 p.m., the affidavit shows.

Before her death, Goncalves told friends and family members that she believed she had a stalker.

Details of the stalker were unknown, and during the investigation into the murder, Moscow police said they were unable to confirm or deny the allegations.

It remains unclear whether Mr Kohberger was the stalker Goncalves feared and how long he may have been watching the victim or victims in the home.

New explanation emerges for mysterious 911 call that alerted police to Idaho college student murders

The 911 call alerting law enforcement to the slayings of the four University of Idaho students has long been shrouded in mystery after Moscow police said the caller initially reported an “unconscious individual” at the home.

The call was made from the mobile phone of one of the two surviving housemates around 11.58am on November 13, with the dispatcher speaking to multiple people.

Officers arrived at the home to find a bloody scene with Kayleigh Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin all dead from multiple stab wounds.

Since then, questions have remained surrounding why the caller reported an “unconscious individual” when officers described the crime scene as one of the worst they had ever seen.

Who is Bryan Kohberger?

As a doctoral student in criminal justice at Washington State University, Mr. Koberger lived just 15 minutes from the victims over the Idaho-Washington border in Pullman.

He had moved there from Pennsylvania to begin his studies in August and had just finished his first semester.

He previously studied criminology at DeSales University – first as an undergraduate and then completing his post-graduate studies in June 2022.

While there, he studied with renowned forensic psychologist Katherine Ramsland, who interviewed serial killer BTK and co-authored the book Confession of a Serial Killer: The Untold Story of Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer with him.

He is also conducting a research project “to understand how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime.”

On December 30, he was arrested in an early morning raid at his family home in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, where he had gone to spend the holidays.

He was extradited back to Idaho and his white Hyundai Elantra was seized by investigators.

The murder weapon – a fixed blade knife – has not yet been found.

He now faces life in prison or the death penalty for the killings, which rocked the small student town of Moscow and made headlines around the world.

The former classmates made the comments on an episode of 48 Hours titled “The Idaho Student Murders” that aired last week on Paramount+.

A former classmate knew Mr. Kochberger in college at Washington State University and recalled that he was suspicious but otherwise “comfortable with other people,” according to a CBS News report on the episode.

“He was very quick to express his opinion and thoughts,” Mr Roberts said. “He would describe things in the most sophisticated, perhaps academic way possible.”

After the arrest of Bryan Kohberger on charges of murdering Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle, social media detectives began reviewing video from a Nov. 30 vigil for the slain students to see if the suspect may have been present.

Armchair detectives – who have been dealing with alleged leads in the case for weeks – latched onto a particular clip showing the back of a tall man with brown hair, making completely far-fetched claims that he could be Mr Koberger.

The baseless speculation has now been discredited by new footage from Inside Edition that appears to show the face of the same man online commenters identified as Mr. Kohberger from behind. In the store video, it is clear that the man is not Mr. Koberger.

Rumors of the vigil marked the latest wild theory to go viral online, only to be quickly debunked.
