Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro arrested in Sicily

Rome CNN —

Matteo Messina Denaro, one of the bosses of Sicily’s Cosa Nostra mafia and Italy’s most wanted man, was arrested by police while being treated at a private health clinic in Palermo, prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia said on Monday.

He had been a fugitive since 1993 and was considered by Europol to be one of Europe’s most wanted men, de Lucia told CNN.

Denaro was sentenced to life in prison in absentia in 1992 for his role in the murders of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino and is believed to be responsible for dozens of mob-related murders.

Known as Diabolico, he is believed to be one of the successors to Bernardo Provenzano, who was arrested outside Corleone, Sicily, in April 2006.

He was detained in an operation carried out by specialized agents of the anti-mafia Carabinieri in the early hours of the morning.

Suspected sightings of him in September 2021 led to a manhunt and hundreds of alerts, the prosecutor said.

It’s a heart-wrenching story, more to come…
