Snow hits Cornwall as a yellow ice warning is issued

Roads were blocked and a number of schools were closed on Tuesday morning after heavy snow fell in Cornwall.

Over a dozen schools decided to close due to the adverse weather conditions, while the A30 near Newquay and the A39 near Truro were also blocked from the early hours, with cars and lorries stuck in the snow.

Drivers were urged to stay home if possible. Sergeant Dave Pearce of Devon and Cornwall Police said in a tweet this morning: “The roads around Truro are terrible. The A39 to Carland Junction is blocked with lorries and cars stuck in the snow.

“The A30 Carland is also blocked. I would suggest you stay at home.”

Devon and Cornwall Police also issued a statement urging people who need to travel to allow extra time for each journey and to drive carefully.

Penrice Acadamy posted a tweet saying: “Due to snow across the county and reports from our bus companies that they are unable to offer services today, the school will be closed. Year 11 students will receive online learning through Satchel One.”

The Met Office said: “Rain changing to snow over parts of Cornwall leading to accumulating snow and then ice as skies clear later overnight.”

And Avon and Somerset Police are advising the public to travel “only if necessary” after 53 crashes were reported to police on Monday night, while a further 67 calls were received for other road-related incidents between 6pm and 11pm. with the total number of reports at more than 100 in five hours.

Most accidents are the result of freezing temperatures, which make for dangerous driving conditions, police said.
