Winnipeg man dies while on honeymoon in Mexico

A Winnipeg woman on her honeymoon at a resort in Mexico is looking for answers after her husband was killed in an accident the night before they were to fly home.

Just 12 hours before Jesse and Stacey Ropos flew home from the Catalonia Riviera Maya resort in Puerto Aventuras, resort staff told Stacey that her husband was dead.

“It was a closed complex. It was supposed to be incredibly safe,” Stacey said in an interview with CTV News on Wednesday morning.

The couple spent nine days at the resort and “made so many memories” together, she said.

On Jan. 13, their last night, Stacey said she and her husband visited a bar at the resort. Stacey said she went up to their room to sleep while Jesse stayed behind.

A translated police report provided to CTV News Winnipeg claims Jesse got into a fight with two resort guests and two security staff. The report alleges that two employees at the resort restrained Jesse, with one choking him.

Around 3 a.m., Stacey was awakened by resort staff and taken to the hotel bar.

“As I got closer, I saw the police tape and a woman stopped me and said, ‘I hate to tell you that your husband is dead,'” Stacey said. “I just immediately ran under the police tape to where he was and I just started yelling for him to get up.”

Two men aged 36 and 34 have been arrested and charged with murder. They remain in custody, and further actions will be decided on Friday.

Stacey said she is back in Winnipeg and said her husband’s body should be back today.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada said consular officials in Mexico are in contact with local authorities and are providing assistance to the family.

“Due to confidentiality reasons, no further information can be disclosed,” the statement said.
