Avalon, Burin Peninsula under winter storm watch

The eastern part of the province is under a winter storm watch.

It’s shaping up to be a messy weekend for the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas, with 15 to 25 cm of snow and wind gusts of 70 km/h starting Friday night and continuing into Sunday morning.

Snow may reach as far west as Terra Nova, but central and western Newfoundland will be spared.

Gander Weather Service meteorologist Mike Vandenberg says there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the system.

He says some details may change, but overall it will be a snowy and stormy weekend, with poor travel conditions on Friday night and Saturday.
