Julian Sands: British actor identified as missing tourist

CNN —

British actor Julian Sands, known for his work on shows like “24” and movies like “Room with a View” and “Arachnophobia,” has been identified as a hiker who has been missing in the Mount Baldy, California area since last Friday, according to the sheriff’s department of San Bernardino County.

Sands was reported missing at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 13, Gloria Huerta, a spokeswoman for the department, told CNN.

CNN has reached out to Sands representatives for comment.

Baldy Peak is located in the San Gabriel Mountains in San Bernardino County.

Search and rescue teams were on the mountain looking for Sands, but because of bad weather and the threat of an avalanche, rescuers had to suspend their search efforts, Huerta said.

Officials are continuing to use drones to search for Sands, but are limited with other resources due to the weather on Mount Baldy, Huerta added.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department recently warned hikers about visiting Mount Baldy, where high winds and ice continue to make conditions dangerous.

In a Facebook post, the agency said that over the past four weeks, search and rescue teams have responded to 14 rescue missions on Mount Baldy and the surrounding area.

“These rescue missions are for lost, stranded and/or injured hikers. Unfortunately, in the last 4 weeks, two hikers did not survive after falling and injuring themselves,” the post said. “The recent storms that brought the snow and icy conditions have not been conducive to hikers, even those who consider themselves to be highly experienced.”

Sands’ other credits include films such as “The Killing Fields” and “Leaving Las Vegas” and television shows such as “Smallville.”

One of his recent credits includes a recurring role on the Netflix TV series What/If.
