Search of Idaho stabbing suspect’s apartment allegedly found hair, blood

According to a search warrant at Brian Koberger’s apartment, police found strands of hair and possible traces of blood on pillows.

In late December, police obtained a search warrant for the apartment of Koberger, who was charged in the November stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students, Kayleigh Goncalves, 21; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20. According to the document describing what they found, which was released Tuesday, the apartment contained a black nitrite-type glove, eight possible strands of hair, a possible strand of animal hair, a collection of dark red stains that were collected without testing, and two scraps of raw pillow with reddish/brown stain.

Kochberger was arrested for first-degree murder the same day police searched his apartment. Koberger was a doctoral student in criminology at Washington State University in Pullman, which is about 10 miles from the victim’s university in Moscow, Idaho.

Police believe that on the night of Nov. 12, Chapin and Kernodle, who had been dating, returned to Kernodle’s rental house after a night out. Goncalves and Mogen returned to the residence they shared with Kernodle around 2 a.m. All occupants, including two other roommates who were not injured in the attack, were asleep at the time.

One of the surviving roommates said she was awakened around 4 a.m. by what she thought was Goncalves playing with her dog in one of the upstairs bedrooms. She then looked out her bedroom window but saw nothing. When she opened her door a second time, she said she heard crying from Kernodle’s room and a man’s voice said something like, “It’s okay. I will help you.

According to the affidavit, the roommate opened her door a third time and saw someone wearing black clothing and a mask walking toward her.

She said he was a male, 5’10” or taller, athletic build with bushy eyebrows. She did not recognize the male, but as she stood in a “phase of frozen shock” he walked past her and she locked herself in her room.

Goncalves and Mogen were found dead hours later in Mogen’s bed, and Kernodle and Chapin were found dead in Kernodle’s room.

Police said they found a knife sheath on the bed next to Mogen’s body and a hidden shoe print at the crime scene. According to the arrest affidavit, DNA on the knife’s sheath button linked Koberger to the crime.
