(Eastern Health Ambulance)
Some private ambulance operators who were on legal strike action are now on strike.
This means there are no emergency services or route transfers.
The employees, including paramedics, dispatchers and EMRs, are stepping down because of a dispute with Fewer’s Ambulance Service, which owns seven different ambulance operations in Newfoundland.
Hubert Doe, business manager for Teamsters Local 855, says they withdrew some services a few weeks ago, but none that affect urgent patient needs. This changed as of 12pm today.
He says they tried to set up a system where they would do an escalating strike with minimal impact on the public, but accuses the employer of pulling a stunt and falsely reporting an employee for non-compliance.
He says this is the second time the company has done this, “clearly showing they have no morals”.
Meanwhile, in a tweet, Western Health reassured residents that emergency ambulance services would continue to be provided across the region.
Western Health guarantees the continuation of ambulances during work undertaken by some private ambulances. Emergency ambulances will continue to be provided throughout the area.
