Eighteen centimeters and I’m going. These are the charges at St. John’s International Airport as of 6:30 this morning.
The snow started last night but has since eased off. However, Rodney Barney, a meteorologist with the Gander Weather Service, says don’t let that fool you.
The storm will re-intensify around midday with strong winds and more snow for Friday to Sunday snowfall totals of between 30 and 60 cm.
Visibility isn’t that bad right now, but that will change according to Barney.
Winds will increase significantly this afternoon and evening, reducing visibility to zero at times.
Meanwhile, flights to and from St. John’s International Airport are mostly grounded today due to winter storm warnings forecast for the area.
As of this morning, the arrivals and departures board at YYT is glowing red with over 30 cancellations or delays.
There are no disruptions at Gander Airport as flights are scheduled on time today.
Travelers are encouraged to check with their airline for the status of their flight and may expect delays if their flight is not rescheduled.
St. John’s Metrobus is not operating at its usual times this morning. A further update will come around 10:00am
