Amherstview emergency services responded to a vehicle in Lake Ontario late Friday morning and underwater searchers were called to assist.
The Amherst Island Ferry tweeted around 10:30 a.m. that it was responding to a water emergency.
Ontario Provincial Police Constable Brianna Raison said the OPP were called to the scene around 10 a.m. and that the vehicle involved has not yet been removed. As such, she was unable to confirm how many people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
“At this time I also cannot speak to the direction of travel (of the vehicle) or the actions prior to the collision as all those details are still under investigation,” Reason said.
The OPP’s Technical Investigation and Collision Reconstruction Unit was on the scene investigating Friday afternoon, and the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was expected to arrive around 4:30 p.m.
